Sports Round Up

Track Cycling:

The Cycling New Zealand Track Cycling National Championships were held in Invercargill last week where St. Peter’s had outstanding representation with 5 current students and many alumni attending.

Hannah Paine and Hazel Gardner came away with four medals between them in the U19 Woman category, showing some great grit and tenacity. Jamie Henderson, Carter Paine and Cooper Nilsson dominated the male categories, especially the sprint events where they took home multiple medals each. These riders are core members of the St. Peter’s cycling team, and we are stoked to see them succeed on the national stage. A big congratulations to all the alumni who raced as well, with notable mentions to Flynn Underwood with a 2nd in the Sprint, and Kyle Paris (who is now a coach for St. Peter’s) with a 3rdin the Points race.

Congratulations to everyone who raced at the NZ National Track Cycling champs, St. Peter’s is proud of all your efforts, and we look forward to the riders bringing their learnings back to the school sessions soon.

Shout out to Damian Paine(parent) who organised and ran the livestream at nationals so we could all watch the whole week live!

Sailing:

Our sailing team have started out the year strong when they walked away with the Burgess Cup at the recent regatta in Hamilton. The Burgess Cup Regatta has been around for over 20 years and provides a chance for schools to compete against one another out on the water.

It was a challenging day for our sailors as the course changed between races, and with wind changes just as frequently, they were certainly kept on their toes. However, the team took out the day with Hamilton Boys’ High School just 4.1 points behind.

Ben Williams won the ILCA fleet, with Alex Coley not far behind. Ben Nelson came second in the open fleet, and Lucy Coley and Ollie Plant took out 4th and 5th respectively in the Starling fleet. The Burgess Cup Regatta was a fun sailing experience for everyone involved, with a great test of their skills.

Triathlon

The Triathlon New Zealand Junior Series concluded last weekend at the Napier Triathlon Festival, where Josie Murphy finished in 3rd place, placing her 2nd overall in the U16 series. Outside of the series, Josie has recently won in U16 events at the Blue Lake and Kinloch events.

It has been great to see her improvement in swimming and cycling since joining the St. Peter's swim club and road cycling squad. Knocked back by a few injuries, her running has continued to improve since last winter with a nod to joining in cross country as beneficial to her success. We look forward to seeing what she can continue to achieve throughout the year.
