Exciting EOTC Trip to Dunedin and Gore: A Journey into Fashion and Design

Last month, our senior students embarked on an enriching Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) trip to Dunedin and Gore, New Zealand. This trip provided a unique opportunity to delve into the world of fashion and design, visiting Otago Polytechnic and participating in the prestigious Hokonui Fashion Design Awards. The trip was a blend of education, creativity, and cultural exploration, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Exploring Otago Polytechnic's Fashion and Design Degrees

Our journey began with a visit to Otago Polytechnic, renowned for its comprehensive and innovative Fashion and Design programs. Upon arrival, we were greeted by faculty members who introduced us to the vibrant campus and their facilities. They emphasised the importance of innovation, sustainability, and adaptability in this ever-evolving field. This information and tour of the campus was invaluable for our students, many of whom are considering pursuing further studies or careers in fashion and design.

The Hokonui Fashion Design Awards in Gore

The second part of our trip took us to Gore, where we were privileged to witness the first night of the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards. This annual event is a significant platform for emerging designers across New Zealand to showcase their talent and creativity. Our students were thrilled to be part of such a prestigious event, and the excitement was palpable as we arrived at the venue.

The fashion show featured a stunning array of designs, ranging from streetwear, glamour, upcycling, avant-garde and natural fibres. Each outfit told a unique story, reflecting the designer's inspiration and artistic vision. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail was truly impressive, and our students were captivated by the originality and diversity on display.

As part of the Level 2 and 3 Fashion Design program at St. Peter’s, students designed and created an outfit to be a part of this show. Students were able to choose a category in the schools’ section and follow the design process using a theme to design an outfit that reflected the requirements of a brief. This process took two terms to complete with a lot of long hours and dedication to ensure their final creation was not only a reflection of their vision but also constructed to a high standard. The experience of participating in a national competition was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating, and it was incredible to see our students' hard work and determination pay off on the runway.

Reflection and Inspiration

The trip to Dunedin and Gore was more than just an educational excursion; it was a journey of inspiration and personal growth. Our students returned with a deeper understanding of the fashion and design industry, as well as a renewed sense of creativity and ambition. The experience at Otago Polytechnic and the exposure to high-calibre designs at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards provided them with a wealth of knowledge and motivation to pursue their passions.

We extend our thanks to Otago Polytechnic and the organizers of the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards for their warm hospitality and support. This trip has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on our students, and we look forward to seeing their future contributions to the world of fashion and design.

Incredible Loss for our students

After the conclusion of the event, the garments were packaged up and sent back to the school. On their return journey, while in the courier truck, all of our student’s hard work and incredible creations were destroyed when the van caught on fire. Our condolences go to all the students who dedicated so many hours and effort to create their amazing pieces.
