Students experienced an unforgettable 13-day cultural and educational immersion across Japan — a rich and rewarding experience that brought classroom learning to life
From the historic streets of Hiroshima to the futuristic skyline of Tokyo, the tour offered a carefully curated balance of history, culture, innovation, and connection.
A powerful and reflective moment of the trip was the group’s visit to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, where students paid their respects and deepened their understanding of global history. The group also explored the architectural beauty of the iconic “White Heron,” Himeji Castle, gaining insight into Japan’s feudal past.
A highlight for many was the opportunity to take part in meaningful cultural exchanges across three schools: Joso Gakuin High School, Shoin Junior and Senior High School, and Learning Tree International School. These visits allowed students to build connections with their Japanese peers, experience local school life, and engage in shared learning experiences that broadened perspectives and fostered lasting friendships.
The tour also embraced the vibrant and contemporary side of Japan. Students immersed themselves in the world of entertainment and technology at Universal Studios Japan and explored the energy of Akihabara, widely known as the centre of Japan’s pop culture and innovation. A unique cultural experience included witnessing the intensity and discipline of a traditional sumo morning practice in Asakusa.
Innovation and future-focused learning were also key components of the journey. Students visited Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Miraikan, where they explored cutting-edge developments in space exploration, robotics, and emerging technologies. These experiences provided valuable insight into the possibilities of STEM pathways on a global stage.
The group also experienced some of Japan’s most iconic spiritual and cultural landmarks. Walking through the thousands of vermilion torii gates at Fushimi Inari Taisha and taking in the breathtaking views from Kiyomizu-dera were memorable moments that showcased the country’s rich traditions and natural beauty.
Beyond the scheduled itinerary, students embraced everyday life in Japan. Travelling aboard the Shinkansen offered a firsthand experience of the country’s renowned efficiency and infrastructure, while visits to local markets and neighbourhoods provided authentic cultural insight. Students also enjoyed traditional-style accommodation and sampled regional delicacies, including the much-loved momiji manju.
This immersive experience not only deepened students’ understanding of Japan but also encouraged independence, adaptability, and global awareness. The connections made, lessons learned, and memories created will no doubt have a lasting impact.
