Year 8 students embarked on an exciting journey to Taupo as part of their New Zealand Tourism unit of work this term.
The anticipation was high as the bus made its way down to their destination, but nothing could quite prepare the students for the adrenaline-pumping adventure that awaited them with the Huka Jet experience. The 20-minute jet boat ride to the base of the iconic Huka Falls, complete with exhilarating high-speed manoeuvres and plenty of 360-degree spins, was the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs and kick-start the day.
After the thrill of the jetboat ride, the pace slowed down with a more cultural and relaxed experience in the heart of Taupo. Students were treated to a delicious hangi lunch, where they learned about the traditional Maaori method of cooking food underground. This was followed by three engaging workshops where students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in Maaori culture. They tried their hand at poi, practiced their co-ordination with rakau sticks, and learned about the significance and handling of the mere.
The trip was not only a fantastic learning experience but also a valuable opportunity for the Year 8cohort to bond and connect with one another outside the classroom. It was especially special following the Year 7 camp, giving the students a chance to strengthen friendships and create lasting memories.
A huge thank you to all the staff who helped make the day such a success!
